Knox Still Maintains Innocence Despite Lack of Evidence
Florence Court to Hear Case on Wednesday
Amanda Knox, the American student who was convicted and later acquitted of the murder of her British roommate Meredith Kercher in Italy, is set to face a new slander trial on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. The trial will be held in a Florence appeals court.
Knox was originally convicted of Kercher's murder in 2009 and sentenced to 26 years in prison. She was acquitted on appeal in 2011 and has since returned to the United States.
The new slander trial stems from a 2013 civil suit filed by Raffaele Sollecito, an Italian man who was also convicted and later acquitted of Kercher's murder. Sollecito claims that Knox made false and defamatory statements about him in a book she published in 2013.
Knox has denied the allegations and says that she is the victim of a "witch hunt." She has also said that she is confident that she will be vindicated in the new trial.
The judge who presided over Knox's second murder conviction has said that he suffered "over the media circus" that surrounded the case. He has also said that he believes that Knox is guilty of Kercher's murder.
The new slander trial is expected to last several days. It is unclear if Knox will attend the trial in person.
